They started in the Canary Islands, then travelled to the Balearics and this week King Felipe VII and Queen Letizia headed to Murcia as part of a tour around Spain to help promote summer tourism.
The main aim of the tour, scheduled to eventually cover all of Spain’s 17 autonomous regions, is to send the message that “Spain is back in business” and support Spain’s tourist, economic and social recovery following the lifting of the 98-day “State of Alarm”.
The royal couple are personally visiting major hotspots, urging international tourists to visit the country and national holidaymakers to once again travel to popular coastal and inland resorts this summer.
During one of their stopovers, mingling with tourists and holding talks with local authorities and business leaders, King Felipe said they wanted to encourage people to resume their holiday plans and help lift their spirits.
Their visit to the Murcia region included a tour of the La Carrichosa fruit and vegetable cooperative in Cieza, and the Murcia Biohealth Research Institute, which is working on major scientific projects related to COVID-19.
Safe and High-Quality Tourism in Spain
The tour is just one key initiative of a multi-million-euro campaign by the Spanish government to try to salvage this year’s peak summer tourist season – and beyond.
Others include a “Responsible Tourism” seal of quality created by the state secretariat of tourism for establishments that follow the “Guidelines on Measures to Reduce the Spread of COVID-19 in the Tourism Sector”, the only measures approved by the ministry of health.
According to the state secretary for tourism, Isabel Oliver, “offering confidence and safety is essential at the moment for re-attracting both domestic and international travellers. This seal of quality is yet another tool in our strategy to re-position Spain as a safe tourist destination for everyone.
“It is also a way to recognise the responsibility of those business leaders who make an effort to create a safe environment in their respective businesses, not only for tourists but also for their own workers and local residents.”
In addition, Turespaña, the official tourist promotion board attached to the ministry of industry, trade and tourism, has released a new video on social media as part of the campaign “Spain is Waiting for You” – with the hashtag #EspañaTeEspera.
Announcing details of the video campaign, Isabel Oliver (also head of Turespaña), said, “Spain is ready to receive foreign tourists under safe conditions as from 1 July and it will do this with its customary warmth and hospitality. Through this video, we want to encourage you to plan your holidays to our country now, where you will be able to find a broad and diverse tourism offer that will live up to any expectations.”
The video “invites you to not stop dreaming of Spain, shows some of the strengths of our country as a tourist destination in terms of natural areas, heritage, beaches and cities, and also alludes to the poet Antonio Machado”.
