Holiday establishments and destinations around Spain are offering even more attractive deals than normal this summer to encourage tourists to visit – both national Spanish and international travellers. With low-cost airlines also returning to the air with great-value flight discounts – to ever-popular holiday areas such as Murcia and the extended Costa Cálida – now is an excellent time to try to forget the past few months of coronavirus lockdowns and transport restrictions and enjoy a sun-blessed and relatively inexpensive Spanish holiday.

So where should you head? What are the cheapest places in Spain, bearing in mind you not only want a budget holiday but also one in a safe environment and with all the trimmings and convenience of a modern tourist infrastructure?

According to a study by Weekendesk.es – a portal specialising in thematic getaways for under €100 a night – Murcia has experienced the largest drop in prices this summer (15 per cent), with an average cost of €90 (second behind Asturias).

Of course, the added advantage for international visitors – especially those travelling from the UK – is that Murcia is serviced by a modern (inaugurated in January 2019) airport in Corvera with excellent connections to other parts of the region and major Costa Cálida resorts along the Mediterranean.

One of the key operators at Corvera Murcia Airport is Jet2.com, which has been gradually boosting its Europe-wide summer schedule since mid-July – including flights between Murcia and Birmingham and Manchester, and others due to be re-launched later this month.

Announcing the company’s plans, Jet2.com and Jet2holidays CEO Steve Heapy said, “We have been saying for some time that the sun will shine again and that, when it does, we will be there to take customers away on their well-deserved holidays.

“The safety, well-being and comfort of our customers is our number one priority. Thanks to our three-step pledge, customers are in the safest hands when they travel with us… These have been incredibly uncertain and difficult times for everyone, and we have been very busy looking after our customers and doing the right thing for them.”

Blissful Beaches, Great Golf and Cultural Charm

Jet2’s website highlights some of the key reasons why holidaymakers should choose Murcia and the Costa Cálida…

“The beaches in these parts are pretty special, while the gorgeous resorts are a mix of culture, palm-fringed promenades and all things authentic Spain. Don’t miss Cartagena, a city clad with colour and olde-worlde charm.” (Cartagena’s old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.)

The Murcia coastline (and inland) is renowned for its golf options, enhanced by the sunny year-round climate. “From the championship golf course in Playa de Orihuela, to the Jack Nicklaus-designed course in Mazarrón, you’re sure to be teeing off in style thanks to these spectacular surroundings.”

And for history buffs… “a popular place to visit is the 18th-century square La Glorieta in the centre of Murcia, and the magnificent architecture of the Cathedral of Santa Maria always attracts visitors. Visit the Museum de la Ciudad for historical artefacts of the city, or check out the Museo de la Ciencia y el Agua for exciting interactive exhibits.”
