Spanish health and tourism authorities have been working closely in tandem to prepare for the return of international travellers – with Corvera Airport Murcia at the forefront of implementing crucial “new normality” measures.
Although one of Spain’s newest international airports (opened in January 2019), Corvera Murcia has already proved to be a valuable transport hub for travellers from the UK and other parts of Europe. It is conveniently located for those holidaying in resorts along the popular Costa Cálida – which takes in such tourist hotspots as San Javier, Cartagena, La Manga and Mazarrón – and offers several attractive low-cost routes.
The first flight arriving at Corvera Airport Murcia after the international restrictions were lifted was from Manchester on 1 July. Airport authorities had spent the morning completing a thorough check of the state of the amenities and security procedures in place to avoid possible COVID-19 infections, visiting key restricted areas (check-in, departure gates and baggage collection) and monitoring the international health department’s thermography equipment.
In an interview with Onda Regional, Airlines Association spokeswoman Carolina Herrero said aircraft were now the most secure means of transport, because airline companies had gone even further with their measures than what was stipulated by European authorities. Also, she added, aircraft were fitted with air filtration and renewal systems that were especially appropriate in avoiding the spread of viruses such as COVID-19.
Herrero reported that, following the first flight on Wednesday, others were scheduled for 2 July, Dublin (Ireland) and Palma de Mallorca, both also operated by Ryanair; while the same company planned a connection with Glasgow (Scotland) on 3 July.
The second airline scheduled to renew operations at Corvera Airport Murcia after the lockdown is Volotea, resuming its connection with Oviedo and inaugurating a Bilbao flight. Then Binter is due to resume flights to and from the Canary Islands on 4 July.
Meanwhile, Jet2 is set to relaunch its UK schedule linking Birmingham (15 July) and Manchester (17 July), and EasyJet plans flight connections with London (14 July) and Bristol (17 July).
Later, other summer flights are planned by Ryanair for London, Bournemouth and Birmingham in August, and by EasyJet for Southend.
Key Security Protocols
In an official statement released as Corvera Airport Murcia prepared to re-open, Aena (Spain’s main airport authority) noted that its safety protocols would include measures related to cleaning and disinfection, safe distancing, general protection measures, signage and information, regular communication, and ongoing adaptation of airport procedures and infrastructure.
Specifically, informative posters and boards have been placed at key points around the airport (check-in desks, security filters, lifts, information stands, boarding gates, toilets, etc.), while other measures include distancing lines and footprints (indicating passenger circulation flows), hydro-alcoholic gel dispensers, messages on digital screens, and protective screens. In addition, messages are being issued through the airport’s public address system to inform passengers of the need to wear a mask at all times and to maintain personal social distancing throughout the terminal.
