Corvera Airport Murcia has been recognised by the Airports Council International as “Best Airport in Europe” for a second consecutive year in the under two million annual passengers category. The Costa Blanca gateway has also received the latest ACI awards for “Easiest Airport Journey in Europe” and “Cleanest Airport in Europe”.

This is the third year in a row that Corvera Airport Murcia has been honoured by the ACI. In 2021 and 2022 the airport also received awards for “Best Hygiene Measures” in Europe providing protection against COVID-19.

The ACI introduced new award categories for the latest year under review (2022), including “Cleanest Airport in Europe”, which Corvera Airport Murcia won thanks to its stand-out cleaning program, and “Easiest Airport Journey in Europe”, in recognition of the airport’s “efforts aimed at providing a pleasant environment and friendly passage through all airport processes”.

The annual awards are considered particularly relevant in the industry, as they are based on evaluations by passengers in ASQ (Airport Service Quality) surveys.

Launched in 2006, ASQ brings together nearly 400 participating airports in 95 countries. The ASQ program is a global benchmarking scheme in the airport industry that allows services offered at each airport to be tested and compared with infrastructures of a similar size in the rest of the world.

The surveys measure passengers’ perception of service quality through questionnaires in which they are asked to rate their experience at airports in relation to aspects such as access, facilities, staff friendliness, security and waiting times at the security checkpoint. All participating airports use exactly the same ACI methodology.

Welcoming these latest awards, Carlos Domingo San Martín, general manager of the airport concession company, said they are “a recognition of the airport manager’s staff, who, together with the regional administration and other institutions, airlines, agents and companies, collaborate to ensure continuous improvements in facilities and services. They are also a stimulus for further efforts to achieve the best possible experience for travellers at their gateway to the region of Murcia.”

Six other Spanish airports also received awards as best in Europe in their respective categories: Palma de Mallorca (between 25 million and 40 million passengers), Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández (15 million to 25 million), and El Hierro, Pamplona, Reus and Asturias (all the same as Corvera Airport Murcia – under two million).

In addition, Pamplona was recognised for its cleanliness and Reus for its easy airport journey (the same awards as those received by Corvera), and El Hierro was honoured with another new award for “Airport with the Most Dedicated Staff in Europe”.

According to its website, Airports Council International “represents the collective interests of airports around the world to promote excellence in the aviation industry. We do this by working with governments, regional ACI members, experts, and international organisations like ICAO to develop policies, programs and best practices that advance airport standards globally.”

Set up in 1991, the ACI currently comprises 712 members who operate 1,925 airports in 171 countries.
